Get a good sound from open high hat cymbals
Last updated on January 27, 2010 at 9:47 pmHere you will learn what to do when you see an ‘Open High Hat’ symbol on a drum score, or if you are just experimenting with sounds the drums can make.
With your left foot, press down on the high hat pedal until the cymbals are tightly closed. Now ease off the pedal slightly and play the cymbals with a drum stick. You should here a sizzling sound from the high hat cymbals. Adjust the level of your left foot up and down slightly to hear all the different open sounds you can make. Some parts of music sound good with the high hat only slightly open and others sound great with a wide open high hat.
Now try hitting a closed high hat and immediately opening them up by releasing your left foot slightly when the stick hits the high hat cymbals. This should sound different to the other method if you do it right and will offer another way of playing the high hats. Now try this again and then close the hats shortly after opening them by pressing down with your left foot on the pedal. Sounding good?
