Now you can hold the sticks correctly, strike the drum a few times lightly using your wrists to make the movement.

Try to keep arm movement to a minimum. Your arms should be away from your body a little bit. Put a small book under your armpit – this is rougly the distance your arm should be held away from your body. In addition, keep your back straight and don’t lean too much. Sit slightly on the edge of the drum stool towards the drums, like you are ready for action. Now try hitting the drums again. This is the most basic way of hitting the drums.

Now instead of moving the wrists, keep them still and try to let the fingers move the sticks. Don’t use the thumb or first finger to move the sticks as this is providing the grip. Ideally, the sticks should never move away from the first groove in your first finger. This technique is one you should develop and use for fast rolls (e.g. 16th notes and higher).
