Choosing your Drum Sticks
Last updated on September 6, 2009 at 1:15 amIf you have developed a good technique, it is possible to make it through every gig without breaking a stick, but this is only possible if you have the right sticks to begin with.
Choosing the right set of drum sticks that work for you is important. This topic is all about personal preference but you will all need to look at 3 areas:
- Size
- 5A is a good all-rounder that can be used for all styles. 5B and up is for hard hitters that like it loud. 7A is good for Jazz or other light styles.
- Wooden or Plastic Tip?
- Plastic Tips give a great sound on the cymbals when played with the tip. Plastic tips have a tendency for some drummers to fly off while you are playing, and are therefore not always reliable. Wooden Tips give a good sound on cymbals but excel in their sound when used on the heads of the drums.
- Brand
- The final thing to consider is which brand works well for you. Even some of the top brands snap easily during playing, so experiment until you find a brand that is suited to your style so that they never break.
Recommended: VATER, LOS ANGELES – 5A (WOODEN TIP)
