Learn about the Music Business

Being a musician is more than just about the music if you want to be a successful professional musician. You need to embrace the business side of music to get anywhere. If all you do at the moment is play drums and turn up to band practise and gigs then you are certainly not doing enough.

Promotion

Spend some time on social networking sites interacting with your fans and promoting your gigs and products. Get flyers and posters designed and printed and distribute them to gain exposure.

Press and Radio

Make a press kit and try to get some radio exposure and some reviews of your gigs or music. If you are quite unknown, you should target smaller radio stations and magazines. Some easier ones to get on are small independent websites that only operate on the internet. Remember, any press is good press… within reason.

Branding / Appearance

Make sure your band logo, website, photos, merchandise and artwork all looks good so that you look professional. If you don’t have any good photos, book a professional photographer. If you need a logo and a website, hire a professional web designer. If you don’t have any merchandise, try Zazzle or Spreadshirt. If any of these things could be improved, get onto it now.

If you have money to invest, you can make more money by getting your own merchandise printed in bulk and selling it at gigs or over the internet. Check out Awesome Merchandise for a good place to start looking.
